David Flores’ Einstein Mural @ The Reserve in Playa Vista
Artist, designer, and frequent BAIT collaborator David Flores has been working on a pair of murals at The Reserve in Playa Vista – and he invited us to take a peek into his process! Flores and his assistant Olivia Bevilacqua were hired to paint two murals at The Reserve, an enhanced work environment developed away from the usual urban congestion. BAIT got a look at one – an Albert Einstein mural – being painted in the future Microsoft office space.
Flores chose an Einstein design – which is based on a previous work that he never used – because it captured the spirit of innovation and “kept it genius level.” He began work on the dual-story mural last Wednesday (April 24), projecting the image onto the wall and tracing it at night. Using those traces as references, he would lay the paint down using spray paint and rollers to fill it in. Flores’ initial thought was to have the eyes on the lower half so that they’d be staring out into the courtyard, at eye level with the people passing through the hallway; the final mural goes with the eyes on the upper half and the mouth/moustache on the bottom. Flores and Bevilacqua finished work on it on Monday, April 29.
Take a look at the entire process that went into creating the stunning mural in the pictures above. The Reserve will open with a grand opening event on May 8.
Keep an eye out for future collaborations between BAIT and David Flores, too!
